Installation Guide
HABITAT Marshes, swamps, lakes, ponds and streams with overhanging woody cover are attractive to breeding wood ducks. More food means more ducks and food resources are usually higher in marshes than in swamps; in placid waters than in swift and turbulent ones. In wooded areas, wood ducks will nest up to a mile from water. For best results, place nesting box within 1/4 mile from water.
HEIGHT Affix houses to trees 10 to 25 feet above the ground. When mounting above the water using 1" pipe, the nest must be 3' above the high water mark. Pipe mounted houses are also successful over lands devoid of trees and heavy cover. Mount over land pipe mounted houses a minimum of 5' from the ground.
SPACING In the woods, place houses 20 to 50 yards apart depending on the tree density. (farther apart in the open woods) In open areas such as over water or open land, 75 to 100 yards is recommended.
NEST MATERIAL Place 3 to 4 inches of saw dust, chips or wood shavings in the nest bowl.
INSTALLATION Place the nesting house prior to the spring nesting season. In the deep south wood ducks nest in early February. At latitude of Kentucky, in mid February; at latitude of central Illinois, in early April; at a latitude of central Minnesota, mid-April.
PREDATORS This box is constructed to minimize raccoon, squirrel and snake predation. In latitudes south of the mouth of the Ohio river, small raccoons and large rat snakes can gain entrance. For houses on pipes, use an inverted, circular cone of sheet metal, 24 inches in diameter, snugly fitted to the pipe. apply grease to the pipe alone or in conjunction with the inverted cone to deter climbing predators.
MAINTENANCE Change nesting material and check you box for any damage annually before the nesting season in our area.
