This Mallard nesting cylinder was designed to help keep 4-legged predators from destroying duck nests. The tapered front was made for easy landing. The curved edge was designed to hold in grasses. And the hole in the back of the unit was designed for the hen to escape from birds of prey.
Field tests have proven units such as this have a better success rate than 80% of the ground nests.

Assembly and Installation
Screw the Mallard Cylinder to a 15 3/4" 2"x4" mounting board, that forms onto the bottom side of the cylinder. A cordless drill works very well for this. Use 2 - 1 1/2" deck screws for this step.
Turn the Cylinder over and center the 1" pipe flange on the mounting board. Use the 4 remaining 1 1/2" deck screws to attach the flange to the mounting board.
We recommend that the mounting support pipe be at least 3' above the highest water anticipated in your placement area.
Thread the 1" pipe cap onto the driving end of the mounting pipe. It is also a good idea to put some grease on the threads so the cap will come off easily. Drive the pipe into the correct depth as stated in section 3.
Thread on the pipe flange with the mounted Mallard Cylinder onto the mounting pole until it is tight.
It is best to position the Mallard Cylinder perpendicular to prevailing winds as to help prevent nesting materials from being blown out.
Mallard Cylinders work the best installed over the water and about 75 yards apart from one another.
Switch Grass works the best as nesting material, but hay or straw also works well. The unit should be filled about half to three quarters of the way full. We also recommend a few handfuls of moist soil to help weight down the material and a more natural nest for the hen. The Bellrose Mallard Cylinder is also molded with a turned edge to also help hold the nesting material in the nesting unit.
In the spring you will need to repeat the step above so the returning hen will have a nest ready to use.
